Each year, the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits seeks nominations for individuals to represent their communities and serve on the MCN board of directors. Leaders of all levels from MCN member nonprofit organizations are encouraged to nominate themselves or a colleague for a board position.
MCN’s Nominating Committee will begin work early each year to identify gaps in board representation and identify areas of our recruitment and slate selection process that can be reviewed with our lens towards an equitable and just society.
Nominations will open in April and close in early August, and the MCN nominating committee will select a slate of recommended board members to fill current vacancies. Once finalized, MCN will bring forward the slate of recommended candidates for approval* by our nonprofit member organizations in October.
A three-year term for the newly elected board members will start in January of the next year.
Things to know about the board election process:
The official vote to approve the slate will be open to ALL nonprofit members via an email sent in October, with online voting remaining open for two weeks.
Each nonprofit member organization will be allowed to cast one vote for approval or declination of the recommended slate. If multiple ballots are submitted from the same organization, MCN will include only the first ballot submitted.
*Note: In 2025, MCN amended its bylaws to transition from a member election process to a member slate approval process in order to improve access to board service for all qualifying candidates, regardless of geographic location, experience and length of service, organizational recognizability, and other factors that may otherwise unfairly impact certain candidates through an election process.
